Scott Moe’s budget must give workers a raise, and fix his healthcare crisis

With Scott Moe’s provincial budget just one week away, Saskatchewan’s largest union is demanding he give hard-working public service workers a raise.

“Public service workers, such as those who run our schools and our health care system, have gone too long without a real raise during what is a cost-of-living crisis,” said Kent Peterson, president of CUPE Saskatchewan. “Our members who work in health care in particular have gone three years without any increase in pay whatsoever – and that is unacceptable,” he added.

The provincial budget must also make good on Scott Moe’s health care promises.

“In last fall’s provincial election we called on Scott Moe to fix his health care crisis, and he said he would. Since he narrowly evaded defeat in that election, he must now use next week’s budget to fulfill his promise,” said Peterson. “Rural health services are still facing weekly disruptions. Regina’s Urgent Care Center is still not running at full capacity. We are still shipping patients out of province for vital care. If Moe is serious about fixing our health care system, this budget is a critical moment for him,” he added.

Hundreds of workers are gathering for CUPE Saskatchewan’s annual convention this week from March 12-14, and health care will be a major topic of discussion.

The convention is being held at the Delta Hotel in Regina (1919 Saskatchewan Drive). Media are invited to attend.
