POSITION OPPORTUNITY

The vacant LGBTQ2+ member position on the Committee Against Racism & Discrimination will have an appointed term ending March 2025.

The committee’s objectives are to:

  • Act as a resource to CUPE Saskatchewan on combating and educating about racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, and all prohibited grounds of discrimination within the Saskatchewan Human Rights Code. This will be done by advising and making recommendations to the Executive Board on these issues.
  • Ensure that policies and programs of CUPE Saskatchewan relating to equality issues are observed, including at CUPE Saskatchewan events. This should be done in accordance with the CUPE Equality Statement and the Code of Conduct.
  • Recommend and/or prepare resource material and a list of speakers on human rights issues.
  • Promote days of recognition for equity-seeking groups and days that memorialize events important to equity-seeking people such as the International Day for the Elimination of Racism (March 21) and the International Day for Disabled Persons (December 3). The committee may provide ideas and suggestions to the Executive Board toward such commemoration.
  • Encourage active participation in the annual Pride Parades/events throughout the province.
  • Develop working links with other organizations, unions, like-minded groups, and other CUPE Saskatchewan and National Committees.
  • Forward issues and advocacy to the National Equity committees when appropriate.

CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT

The successful candidate must commit to attend periodic in-person and video conference (Zoom) meetings. Union leave may be required to attend such meetings. There are typically up to four (4) meetings in a calendar year. The meeting schedule is published by the CUPE Saskatchewan office, with meeting notices and video conference links circulated by the office.

The committee meeting schedule is as follows:

  • May 23, 2024 (in-person, Regina, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
  • September 23, 2024 (virtual via Zoom, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
  • November 29, 2024 (virtual via Zoom, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.)
  • January 13, 2025 (virtual via Zoom, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

The appointee will be compensated for lost wages through union leave from work when required to attend meetings, including costs and expenses related to the attendance of meetings (such as applicable per diems).
