The CUPE 5428 bargaining committee and the Town of Esterhazy returned to the table on July 22, successfully reaching a tentative agreement. CUPE 5428 members voted to ratify the deal at a general membership meeting, and the Town of Esterhazy followed with ratification at a special council meeting.
“It was really heartening to see the union and community come together during this difficult round of bargaining,” said Sheldon Profit, CUPE 5428 bargaining committee member. “The progress we made at the table would not have been possible without union solidarity and community support.”
Highlights of the tentative agreement include:
- An 11% wage increase over four years with full retroactivity for members;
- A $500 signing bonus for all staff, including summer students; and
- Adjustments to town office staff’s hours of work, providing greater flexibility in scheduling their earned days off.
“Bargaining was drawn out by the town’s concessionary demands, which included reductions to seniority and leave access. Once the town withdrew those demands, we were able to reach an agreement that protects our members’ rights,” said Profit.
During this round of bargaining, CUPE 5428 members voted to transfer their jurisdiction to a separate bargaining unit within CUPE 342, the local that represents City of Yorkton workers. As a result, CUPE 5428 members will soon be recognized as CUPE 342-03. In 2024, members of the CUPE local representing Town of Preeceville workers made the same move and are now recognized as CUPE 342-02.
“Our members made this decision to strengthen their bargaining power and build greater solidarity,” said Profit. “CUPE 342 has been a regional leader and an invaluable support in helping us secure this deal.”
Despite the obstacles, Profit said the round ended constructively. “We finished bargaining on a positive note and are looking forward to improving relations with the town in the future.”
CUPE 5428 represents inside and outside workers in the Town of Esterhazy.
