CUPE National Secretary Treasurer Candace Rennick gave her report today to delegates in Regina. CUPE is growing and hiring more staff across Saskatchewan to better support locals in the important day to day work, while also investing in services and programs to strengthen our member engagement.
The power of our union lies in the locals and Rennick believes that they are the key to engagement. Our local leaders are closest to their members and understand their issues and their fears. For this reason, they are in the best position to get members on board and engaged.
Now more than ever we need our members ready to act. Rennick warned that right wing governments are poised and ready to take advantage of the uncertainty of the current moment to lower employment standards, weaken labour laws, and reduce union density.
Rennick emphasized that the work ahead for us as a union is to build alliances with our neighbours, fellow union members, and communities to fight back. She assured delegates that as Canada’s largest union we are ready and equipped for the fights ahead.
“Our members work from coast to coast in every community, town and city, big and small. We are organized, experienced, courageous, and well resourced. Let’s put everything we have into reshaping our economy to one that works for people. Let’s stand united as a union, and in coalition with our allies.”
Because by working together, staying focused, being organized and strategic… that’s when we win.”
