Today, Saskatchewan NDP Leader Carla Beck kicked off her election campaign with a guarantee she will not raise taxes when she becomes premier.
“People are struggling. We’ve got to lower costs and that’s exactly what we’ll do,” said Beck. “We want to give folks a guarantee that unlike Scott Moe and the Sask. Party, we won’t raise your taxes – in fact we’ll lower them,” added Beck, who has already announced she would suspend the provincial gas tax.
CUPE Saskatchewan fully supports Beck’s pledge to lower costs.
“Carla Beck’s guarantee to not raise taxes, and to suspend the fuel tax, will put money directly into the pockets of CUPE members,” said Kent Peterson, CUPE Saskatchewan President, “Scott Moe’s tax, fee, and utility rate hikes have beaten the hell out of workers. It’s time for change,” he added.
Beck’s No Tax Hike Guarantee ensures that workers and families will have certainty that the province will be more affordable under a Carla Beck government. The Guarantee applies to all forms of provincial taxation. That means no increases to income taxes, small business taxes, or provincial sales tax.
As premier, Scott Moe hiked taxes, fees, and utility rates dozens of times – including the largest tax grab in Saskatchewan history when his government hiked the PST and expanded it to prepared food items in grocery stores, children’s clothing, used cars, restaurant meals, and insurance premiums.
“Scott Moe has broken Saskatchewan’s affordability. Scott Moe’s cost-of-living crisis has made life harder for CUPE members, and all workers,” said Peterson. “Electing Carla Beck in this fall’s election is the best way to fix Scott Moe’s cost-of-living crisis,” he added.
