Public sector workers are the backbone of our communities. CUPE Saskatchewan wants to shed a light on the hard work our members are doing during the COVID-19 pandemic. If your local has a story they would like to feature, please contact your national staff representative.
Today we are highlighting the members of CUPE Local 8443, who are education support workers with the Saskatoon Public School Division.
“Since the COVID-19 pandemic started, our members have been working hard to keep our education system running,” said Scott Barrett, president of CUPE Local 8443. “We are keeping our physical infrastructure safe, supporting the monumental shift in technology uses, and finding ways to support students and our communities.”
Recently, CUPE 8443 nutrition coordinators have been redeployed as part of a partnership with the Saskatoon Tribal Council to prepare 1,000 dinners a day for families in need.
“With schools closed, many children are missing out on nutrition support programs. This partnership will allow our members to provide healthy meals to families in need,” said Barrett.
Barrett emphasised the importance of keeping members safe during COVID-19.
“Our priority continues to be keeping our members safe, while providing public services. Workers will be provided proper personal protective equipment, and will be orientated on physical distancing protocols,” added Barrett.
