REGINA – CUPE is renewing its support for those living with HIV and AIDS with members participating in World AIDS Day events and highlighting its HIV and AIDS Policy. Observed annually on December 1, World AIDS Day is an important reminder of the community approach needed to support those living with HIV and AIDS, and the access to reliable public services required to further prevent the spread of the virus.
“CUPE members are on the front line delivering public services that help Saskatchewan residents living with HIV and AIDS each and every day. Some CUPE members themselves have been impacted by HIV and AIDS or work alongside fellow members who are HIV positive,” says Tom Graham, President of CUPE Saskatchewan Division. “Through our leadership in defending public services and our union-wide policy, CUPE is committed to supporting workers impacted by HIV and AIDS.”
CUPE members have been strong leaders on the issue of HIV and AIDS both nationally and internationally. In 1995, CUPE members adopted a progressive policy statement on HIV and AIDS – groundbreaking work in taking an active first step to battle against discrimination and prejudice for members who are HIV positive. CUPE recently released a new CUPE HIV and AIDS Policy to continue and renew its commitment to health and safety standards to protect workers, defend the human and labour rights of those facing stigmatization, discrimination or even violence as a result of HIV and AIDS, and to speak out for strong public services vital in the prevention and treatment of the virus.
